OVERALL CLASS FEEDBACK

This is a PowerPointthat we put together to show the feedback for our video and then showed how we are going to react from it and improve. This was completed by Phoebe.

Teacher Feedback On 1st Draft

The performance of the main artist is strong and there is a clear consideration for mise en scene in terms of costume and styling which is relevant to the genre and helps to convey the representation of teens going from being conformists (black and white 6th form uniform) to the more colorful/ casual clothing see during the rooftop scenes.) The main drawback of the video is that the overall concept is not clear. I would suggest you sit down and make a list of all the things/ social activities that your teenage audience would consume/ take part in and consider how you can include montage shots of these activities in your video. Remember your concept is about the freedom of youth culture. Consider this in terms of the overall mise en scene (costume ,props) camerawork, editing (including special effects/transitions). In order to pull this concept of you need to show how the video has been constructed in a way that breaks typical conventions. Watch some concept based dance videos for reference.

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE

Production Schedule

Date: 16th November 2014
Location: Rooftop (Mile End)
Action: Filming
Description: We managed to get a lot of footage for the beginning scenes. The actors looked good on the screen and the quality of the picture was good.
It was hard to get footage of the artist performing as he did not know the words well.
We gave the artist a copy of the lyrics so that hopefully next time he is more comfortable singing into the camera/

Date: 20th-23rd November 2014
Action: Editing
Description: James started a small draft of the first few scenes and was testing out different things we could do. He was experimenting different colour corrections and different editing techniques such as transitions.

Date: 23rd November 2014
Location: Rooftop (Mile End)
Action: Filming
Description: FILMING WAS CANCELLED.
We had to cancel filming because there was really bad weather and it did not stop raining. Because of this we moved this filming day to the next Sunday.

Music Video Beginning (ROUGH Draft)

After getting some footage we decided to try a few things out and edit a few clips to make a rough draft of the beginning.
We experimented on things like color correction, brightness, contrast, filters, slowing down clips and making clips faster. The outcome is not want we want because it is still really rough but we are happy with the mood the editing sets.

PLANNING PITCH

Here we made a power-point summarizing our ideas for the music video. Hopefully through this we can gave everyone the view that we are seeing for the video. This piece of work was completed by both me and phoebe.

FOCUS GROUP: RESPONSE

Response to focus group
We carried out a focus group with people that would fit in to our target audience. We did this so that we could get feedback about some of the ideas we have for our video. From this feedback we can make any changes that they suggest, this will keep our audience happy and potentially make the video better.

The questions that we asked our focus group and the changes we could make:

1.      Do you think the story makes sense?
We asked this question to make sure that all of our ideas made sense and that the audience could understand the message we are trying to get across. From the answers we received from our focus group we will not be making any changes to our story-line as they thought it was very good and they understood what we was trying to say.

2.      Would it be better if we filmed in the night or in the day?
We asked this question as we have been unsure of what time of day we should film most of our video at. The answers that we got from the focus group gave us a clearer idea of what the audience would like to see.

3.      If you could choose a style of clothes that the star would wear what would it be?
We asked this questions even though we have quite a clear idea of what we want our artist to wear we wanted to ensure that the audience had the same ideas. The answers that we got from our focus group showed us that the style we have in mind would also make the audience happy, they had the same ideas as us.

4.      Is there anything you would change or do differently for our video?
We asked this question to make sure that the audience was happy with all of our ideas and what they think we could do better. From the answers we got we know that the audience wants to see our video in more than one location and that the montage should be of things such as skateboarding etc. We can now make sure that we listen to their feedback and make our video more appealing to our target audience.

5.      Should the video be more performance or concept based?
We asked this question so that we know what the target audience would want more of. We wanted to make our video more concept based, after listening to the focus group feedback we know that they would rather have a mixture of both with more performance, when filming our video we can keep this in mind and make sure we have more performance than we was planning to as this would keep our target audience happy.

FOCUS GROUP

Here is our focus group that we did for our video. We explained our synopsis and plan for the video and then asked a few questions to gain feedback. For example we asked them if the video would be better shot at night or in day. This focus group will help us when making our video because it will remind us what the target audience wants to see.

FINAL MUSIC VIDEO SYNOPSIS

Who is Jaden smith?
Jaden is a young teenager who is miles ahead of his age group. His thought process is not like any other. Normal people want to fit and not be noticed. He doesn't. He doesn't want to be vein and have all the attention but he is not at all afraid to have the spotlight on him. His main aim is to stand out from the crowd. Be different. Everyday he wakes up and wants to do something spontaneous(the video will be spontaneous and random to match this ambition of jadens).

His friends:
Like him, jadens friends have the similar views and thoughts about society. They too also want to achieve individuality by being random and free. His friends(social group) will be very important in the video by creating a fun and random atmosphere that will make the video look ten times as good. All of them including jaden try desperately everyday to escape the reality of society and get away from the norm. Normally they like to do this by going to those favorite place "the rooftop". This place offers a true get away. It is beautiful. The white walls are littered with green bushes and beautiful plants. It is like being on an island in Spain or somewhere in the south of France. It's a really cool place.

The escape:

As soon as they enter the building they are free. Free of anything that will hold them back. Parents, school, life, society and most of all free from the world around them. When they are there they can truly be themselves and have fun.

THE VIDEO:

Start---

*the group are standing in a line staring up at the rooftop in their school/work clothes.*

*they get in a lift*

*as the lift door opens they are suddenly in different clothing, they are dresses in what they want, what they like*

{meaning} - the opening of the lift symbolizes their escape and grants them there "freedom".

MIDDLE---

The middle is pretty much random shots and lots of editing. It shows the randomness and spontaneous feeling that the group spreads.
The random shots will be accompanied by multiple performances by the main artist; jaden. Other than that, the middle part of the song is pretty random and filled with a montage of shots.

END---

The end is going to be very similar to the start. Instead it will be the exact opposite. It will be the group going back down in the lift and as the lift opens on ground floor they are back in their work/school clothes. All of them with stone cold faces because they are back to reality and back to the sad society the live in.

MUSIC VIDEO CONVENTIONS: POWERPOINT

Here i created a small power point that showed the basic codes and conventions of a music video. I did this so that i can refer back to it and see if my music video is meeting the criteria.

MUSIC VIDEO SYNOPSIS

Our music video is going to be a concept based video meaning it will not have a storyline or a script to follow. The concept is based on the randomness of the song and this will be amplified by the random shots and angles in the video. The main part of the video will be multiple performances by the main actor who will be the artist. It will mostly just be him in the shot singing into the camera. For example, the shots will be in random and empty locations. To accompany the performances we will have a LOT of montage shots including the location, the outfits/accessories and how the group interact. The lyrics are extremely random so it is going to be hard to have a storyline to the video.

We are planning to film the video in many different locations. However the main setting will be on a rooftop. This represents the group’s ambition of getting away from the rest of the world and being as furthest away from reality as possible. This rooftop offers this perfectly and provides an escape for them that will be shown in the video. So the group are the main focus for the video and how they act around each other. We want them to portray a sense of freedom. Obviously the artist is the main character but the group is very important in creating this free atmosphere. The actions of the group are going to be extremely random and not staged so that it will truly reflect a group of teenagers trying to escape the world.

I will link you some videos that have certain things and features that we want to include in our video. Please note that our video will not exactly look like it but some aspects of editing and shots are exactly what we want to achieve.

TREATMENT FOR MY MUSIC VIDEO

Here i put my ideas down on paper on what i think the music video should look like. i just outlined what we would film and how it links to the song, even if it doesn't.

LYRIC ANALYSIS

Here I printed out the lyrics of my chosen song and quickly annotated what I though the lyrics meant. Basically I analysed them to see if there was any hidden meanings or secret messages. I also put some suggestions of what we might film in relation to the lyrics.
